This is a Gonzo Horror Show of a book。 No mention of the Nobel Laureate in R&B or that feisty Black Baron Nemesis but hey no need to Riot。 Stories, stills, puzzles and even masks。 What more can one ask for。 Oh yea, a Plastic Donut would be nice if we did not get Lost in Aisle 7。 Go out and buy/steal this book now。 Sincerely,Johnny CakesAlias Apuch

When you hear the word "almanac," who do you think of? Old farmers? Eric Eskola? Cathy Wurzer? Joe Mauer? As a long time Gorillaz fan, I was disappointed reading their second book。The book has some good to it I'd like to get out of the way first: The art is lovely。 Jamie Hewlett has always been a fantastic artist, so if you're just buying this for the art you're definitely not going to be unhappy。 There's very little new art in here though, so if you're looking for something new you'll be left yearning for more。 There is even art that is reused twice in the book, despite a fair number of artworks fr As a long time Gorillaz fan, I was disappointed reading their second book。The book has some good to it I'd like to get out of the way first: The art is lovely。 Jamie Hewlett has always been a fantastic artist, so if you're just buying this for the art you're definitely not going to be unhappy。 There's very little new art in here though, so if you're looking for something new you'll be left yearning for more。 There is even art that is reused twice in the book, despite a fair number of artworks from 2020 not even being included in the book at all。Along with the art, the graphic design is nice and definitely helped get some of the writing down。 There are some very hard to ignore formatting issues when it comes to pages showcasing art across two pages though。 Off the top of my head, I can think of three artworks ruined because the crux of the piece has been sucked into the seam of the book。With the good aside。。。 we come to the purpose and writing of the book。I'm not sure whos idea it was to create an almanac that was both a collectors item and a book you're supposed to write in and take scissors to, but it does not mesh at all。 Over the years the band has always been for all ages while very clearly being targeted to people a bit older, so to see them go from a stance of not wanting to patronize kids in 2005 to adding masks and coloring pages to the back of the book。。 it's a bit jarring。 This isn't exclusive to the almanac's activities either; The writing has no clue what it wants to be either。By far, the writing is the bulk of this review's score。 It's terrible。 It seems like writers found five jokes they liked and decided those were going to be all the characterization this band will ever have。 Four out of five of them are food jokes straight out of a quirky 2010s jokebook (mind you, even in 2010 when that was in style and Gorillaz was active they never stooped this low)。Comparing how the band spoke and interacted in their first book, Rise of the Ogre, to how they act now it feels like they've run out of material and/or have completely lost their way。 Noodle went from a jaded, introspective teen who was critical of the music industry and had wrote all of their album Demon Days, to what I can only describe as "out of touch white men trying to write what a japanese woman would act like。" Russel Hobbs has been reduced to hot sauce jokes, Murdoc seems to have traded in his oozing charisma for tears, and 2D is written too dumb to function。Noodle got an extra short story in the Almanac which was well written from a technical standpoint, but once again it's missed the point of her character and what the band is about。 On top of that, this isn't even a new story but an old story gone into more detail that wasn't needed at all。 It's the best writing out of the whole book but doesn't change the fact it is filler material。。 In a book that written with almost 100% filler。Any talk of the band being a band is nonexistent as well which is really what this book should have been about, along with their lives as celebrities。 Of course the standard is lower for some people because Gorillaz is a cartoon band, though if you have read their first book it's almost completely all about the band-- What ends up not being about the band is either explanations for why they formed the band or their life now after being in the band。 They go through in depth talks about their music and it's genuinely funny and insightful。。。 None of what their first book had transfered to the almanac beyond Jamie Hewletts art。The two stars are because I do think the physical quality of the book along with the art is nice。。。 But if I'm being completely honest I don't think I could recommend this book in good faith。 You're better off buying Rise of the Ogre and Jamie Hewlett's newest art book instead。 。。。more

the book was fun and the art was amazing! it doesn’t take long to read (maybe an hour for me) but a lot of the content is random。 if u want to learn more about the band, this probably isn’t the right book but it’s definitely enjoyable。

Lisa

Complete faff, but redeemed by gorgeous full-colour glossy plates, making Hewlett’s art the true draw here。

This book is fun! Big fan of Gorillaz, so the art work is amazing and gorgeous (having the deluxe version is well worth the money to be able to see all the little details)。 The quizzes and games are a cute addition, but I wouldnt want to mark the book to actually complete them so that might have been better used space for more lore or pictures。 The stories and articles are also very fun and add a little more onto the ever expanding Gorillaz lore。 Noodles story was nice to read (I’d love more of This book is fun! Definitely add this to your collection! 。。。more

A neat treat if you're the kind of Gorillaz fan (like me) who just enjoys the concept of Gorillaz and learning about what the members are up to or, say, what Russel's go to spicy cookie recipe is。 It's a fun, light excursion into bits and bobs regarding Gorillaz lore and the Gorillaz world。 I enjoy the interactivity of the book (puzzles, games, crafts, recipes, etc。), a definite plus for the younger fans。What this almanac will not fulfill for you is anything of weight regarding actual album prod A neat treat if you're the kind of Gorillaz fan (like me) who just enjoys the concept of Gorillaz and learning about what the members are up to or, say, what Russel's go to spicy cookie recipe is。 It's a fun, light excursion into bits and bobs regarding Gorillaz lore and the Gorillaz world。 I enjoy the interactivity of the book (puzzles, games, crafts, recipes, etc。), a definite plus for the younger fans。What this almanac will not fulfill for you is anything of weight regarding actual album production or guest features。 All of the (mock?) interviews are comically absurd, more for a laugh than to explore the guest's input。I happen to be someone who loves learning about weird lore stuff like Noodle's music playlists and adventures in demon slaying, the features and history of the new renovated space Winnebago, etc。 but if that doesn't sound intriguing, the art and the almanac as an object will still be enough to justify picking this one up for any Gorillaz fan。Full list of contents8。5/10 。。。more

If there's a thread between absurdity and nonsense, ego and self-glorification, with an eye for both, then this book has managed to thread it。 The pedestrian narrative coupled with the amazing art is the reason for the rating。 Of course, if this all was done on purpose, then bravo。 If you're a Gorillaz fan, you'll want it。 If you're an art fan, you'll like it。 If you're neither, then you'll probably pass an not miss a thing。 In the end, let's hope this never happens again。 If there's a thread between absurdity and nonsense, ego and self-glorification, with an eye for both, then this book has managed to thread it。 The pedestrian narrative coupled with the amazing art is the reason for the rating。 Of course, if this all was done on purpose, then bravo。 If you're a Gorillaz fan, you'll want it。 If you're an art fan, you'll like it。 If you're neither, then you'll probably pass an not miss a thing。 In the end, let's hope this never happens again。 。。。more

A lot of filler that reads like fan fiction (if you want a fun read about the band's lore, check out 'Rise of the Ogre' instead)。 The artwork of course is what is of real interest here。 A lot of filler that reads like fan fiction (if you want a fun read about the band's lore, check out 'Rise of the Ogre' instead)。 The artwork of course is what is of real interest here。 。。。more

I would’ve liked to see more discussing the music and their recent album but overall it was enjoyable and had good humour 😌👋
